One of my friends asked me if I wanted to come with him to Ken's Cafe for lunch and was unaware that this place even existed. You walk into the place and I thought it was great. 1960's style bar stools with the aqua green counter, 7Up billboard telling you of the specials from who knows when and a retro style soda fountain.
The smell of frying and cooking fills the cafe (broken exhaust fan? I don't know) and when you sit at the counter you can take a peek into the cooking area where I'm assuming Ken, is cooking like a maniac. This guy is a machine as he fires up all of these orders on this "super wok" that he uses.
There are only two people who work inside the restaraunt (Ken and his wife) and it is always busy with the Cloverdale townsfolk stopping by for a bite to eat. Occationally I see the film crews from movies chowing down as well.
Lunch specials are good and cheap ranging from $4.50 to $6.50 and you get huge portions regardless if it's dine in or take out. Try the ginger beef, nice and spicy. -

Food was hot and great. Felt bad for the delivery guy who had to find our "side door" but did not take too long. Chicken fried rice didn't even need soy sauce.

Greasy spoon Chinese diner. A culinary combination you would only find in the Lower Mainland. That is what you get at the family run Ken's Cafe on the old strip in Cloverdale.
Ken's has nostalgic appeal with its bar and counter area right out of the 1960s. Nothing fancy, just what you would imagine from a diner on "mainstreet" in a ubiquitous small town. A Chinese couple are the only employees I have seen at Ken's and they are cooking up a storm.
The food at Ken's hits the mark for what it is trying to achieve.
If you're looking for a whole grain, "healthy", breakfast, Ken's is not for you.
If you are looking for artisinal breads, bacons and free range eggs, Ken's is probably not for you.
If you want a straight ahead bacon, eggs, and toast breakfast that is homemade with a little love (ie. fat) that won't bust your pocketbook, then Ken's is the place.
For homemade burgers and fries, Ken's is your place.
For authentic Chinese food that your parents would make (if you were Chinese), then Ken's is your place.
Because Ken's runs a small staff, and basically make everything as you order it, it can take a while to get your order. So if you are in a hurry, you should probably call ahead for take out or expect to wait a little longer than most places. -

Yum! I am still enjoying leftovers from the other nite!
NO MSG is no lie, baby! Real flavour, real good food!
This family run cafe is probably the best chinese take-out place I have come across! Great fried rice, ginger beef, deep fried wontons, i can go on and on.... and super friendly service! -
